Frequently Asked Questions

Why is confirming my civic address important?

Confirming your civic address is crucial for improving emergency response times. Currently, our area operates under Level 1: Basic 911, where dispatchers rely on callers to describe their location. This can lead to delays, especially if:
   •    Different names are used for the same roads.
   •    Homes are set back or hidden from view.
   •    Stress makes it hard to explain your location clearly.

By confirming your civic address, we aim to transition to Level 2: Enhanced 911, where your location is automatically provided to emergency services, ensuring faster and more accurate responses.

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 911 services?

Level 1: Basic 911
When you call 911, the operator does not automatically receive your location. You must verbally provide your address, which can be challenging during emergencies.

Level 2: Enhanced 911
Your phone number and registered civic address are automatically displayed to the operator, allowing for quicker and more precise dispatch of emergency services.

You can learn more by downloading and reading the SNL2022 CHAPTER E-7.03 - Emergency 911 Act, 2022 (PDF).

Who created these civic addresses, and how were they determined?

A dedicated group of local volunteers, including a local Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist, developed the civic addresses. They used mapping tools and local knowledge to assign addresses that improve location accuracy for emergency services.

Who is involved in this initiative?

This project is primarily led and overseen by our local Volunteer Fire Department and the Volunteer Fire Chief.

They are working in collaboration with a group of volunteers and the Codroy Valley Area Development Association (CVADA), a non-profit, non-shareholding corporation that is not a government entity.

Who will own and maintain this data?

The CVADA will securely store and manage the collected data. This information will only be used to enhance 911 emergency services and will not be shared with any government agencies for other purposes. (such as support for taxation).

Is this another step toward regionalization or introducing property taxes to this area?

Absolutely not. This initiative is solely focused on enhancing emergency response capabilities. It has no connection to regionalization efforts or the introduction of property taxes. The information collected will not be used for taxation or governance purposes.

When will Level 2 Enhanced 911 be introduced?

We aim to implement Level 2 Enhanced 911 services within the next three years. Confirming and standardizing civic addresses is a crucial first step in this process.

How is my personal information protected?

We are collecting and handling your information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). This federal law sets out 10 fair information principles, including:
   •    Consent: Your information is collected with your knowledge and agreement.
   •    Limiting Use: Your information will only be used for the stated purpose of enhancing 911 services.
   •    Safeguards: Appropriate security measures are in place to protect your information.

It will not be shared with other government entities, including Canada Post, or used for any purpose other than enhancing 911 emergency services. We are committed to ensuring that this data is not used for taxation or any other governmental functions.

Can I use this address for postal or shipping services?
