CVADA Quarterly Community Collaboration Sessions

We are currently exploring how we can deepen the communication amongst the community and help the CVADA understand more of what the community needs.

We wish to host quarterly events inviting the whole community to participate in sessions of communicating collaboratively with each other, sharing concerns, interests and information on matters that affect us as a community.

What We Are Trying To Achieve

Our key objective is to foster outcome-based constructive discussion so we can identify what we can do as a community to support our well-being and growth.
We see the CVADA as a community advocacy organization that can engage with government and private organizations in ways that support the community's needs and desires.
What is critical in doing so is to be the catalyst for construction discussion amongst the community so we can all hear what concerns, issues, and interests and explore what steps we can take to mitigate the challenges, or capitalize on the opportunities.
We feel it is essential for an advocacy organization to reflect the needs of the advocates it serves; these community communication sessions are a crucial step in doing so.

Community Collaboration Session Structure

We are running sessions that will be facilitated so we focus on outcomes.

Open Space is a straightforward and effective way to create participant-driven meetings. It allows a group to work together, maximizing each individual's time, effort and contribution to the discussion.

This approach to a structured meeting provides the following benefits:

1) It is the most effective use of each participant's time and contribution.

2) It produces a clear list of actions to get things done.

3) We address only the most important topics for this group.

4) The group designs the agenda of topics.

Open Space Sessions operate with a few steps. These steps are deceptively simple yet provide just enough structure for practical discussions on the most critical topics to create a list of the most effective measures that would benefit the community.

To learn more about Open Space meetings, you can visit the following websites: OpenSpaceWorld.org, and Open Space Technology on Wikipedia, and you can watch a video about the experience of participating in an Open Space session.

Step #1 - Creating the Agenda

After being introduced to the principles and practices of open space, the facilitator invites participants to build the event schedule, gathering ideas from everyone and voting to identify the most critical topics to discuss for that group at that time. Individuals propose session topics they'd like a group of participants to discuss. With a vote for interest for each topic, a schedule emerges, composed of sessions around topics people feel most passionate about pursuing.

Step #2 - Conversations Important to You

The facilitator writes each of the top-voted topic titles on posters distributed along the wall. The poster for the topic will serve as the area people can convene to discuss that topic. The facilitator will invite each meeting participant to choose and assemble around the topic poster they feel they can contribute the most.

Step #3 - Best Course of Action

As the discussion session begins, each group that assembles to discuss a topic has a set time to answer three questions:

  1. What is the problem or opportunity? (10 minutes)

  2. How might we go about getting something done? (20 minutes)

  3. What is the best course of action the CVADA can take? (15 minutes)

Step #4 - Hearing the Best Course of Actions

We all reassemble as a group, and a representative from each topic will read out to the rest of us the best course of action suggested by the group. The collection of ideas will be the suggestions the CVADA can consider as they find ways to benefit the community.

CVADA Quarterly Community Communications Session

January 30th, 2024

Volunteer Fire Department - Fire Hall

We plan to conduct our usual open session to gather fresh perspectives from community members on potential development opportunities in the area. During this session, we will invite your suggestions on what can be developed and seek your input on ways to implement these ideas effectively.

Meanwhile, we will also have some information on three of our initiatives:

1) The Starlite Trail Upgrade Project - A project for 2024/25 that will leverage almost $1 Million in gov't funding to upgrade the Starlite trail to realize its potential as a landmark destination for locals and tourists alike.

2) The Codroy Valley Tourism Blueprint - A project to work with tourism experts, releveant organizations and associations, and the community to create a projection of what potential there is for business and investment for tourism in the Codroy Valley for the next 10 years.

3) The Codroy Valley Ecomuseum - The Codroy Valley Ecomuseum will be an interactive outdoor museum that brings the valley's history and culture to life through stories narrated by local elders, accessible via smartphone technology at various landmarks. This immersive experience aims to deepen community and visitor engagement with the valley's heritage, enhancing the rich experience of living here and tourism.

The Agenda will be provided soon.
